Update: Minecraft snapshot version 16w05b is now available in the launcher.

This weeks snapshot contains only few fixed for bugs reported on the bug tracker. We started looking at the Realms integration to make sure everything is up to date with the changes that were introduced during the lifetime of the 1.8.x versions.

We also started automating more of our internal workflows. It doesnt make much sense to mention that here, because its nothing you can see in the game and it only makes our lives easier as developers, but for the sake of having a slighly longer post this week I decided to keep it in here.

Notable changes:

  • Fixed some bugs

  • Tweaked boats a bit more

  • Hidden a small recipe change

  • Endermites or now 2.44% more happy than before, especially in boats

Bugs fixed in this snapshot:

  • [REDACTED]

Please report any and all bugs you find in Minecraft to bugs.mojang.com. If nobody reports a bug, we cant fix it!

To get snapshots, open your launcher and press the New Profile button. Call it snapshots and check the box saying Enable experimental development snapshots and save. To switch to the normal version, you can select it in the dropdown at the bottom left corner of the launcher. Back up your world first or run the game on in a different folder (See the new profile dialog).

Snapshots can corrupt your world, please backup and/or run them in a different folder from your main worlds.

The update cycle is starting to wind down! Each snapshot that comes out has a little bit fewer changes, and even less bugs ironed out. This isn't a bad thing! As fewer bugs are discovered, it only means many more have been fixed over the development cycle, and when 1.9 goes live, it will be as bug-free* as possible. Neat!

CHANGELOG

  • Tweaked boats a bit more

  • Changed crafting recipe for trapped chests, now shapeless

BUGFIXES

  • Fixed the doMobLoot gamerule preventing player XP from dropping

  • Fixed being unable to use /enchant on entities

  • Fixed endermites being positioned too low in boats

Please report any and all bugs you find in Minecraft to bugs.mojang.com. If nobody reports a bug, it will multiply, and create even more bugs!

Unbreakable Blocks in Survival?

One unavoidable truth about Survival Minecraft is that every block in the game can be broken, which is an unfortunate weakness in what could otherwise be impenetrable builds. Even the most elaborate defenses can eventually be breached with naught but a pickaxe. So, what is an aspiring fortress-builder to do? SimplySarc might have the answer!

The proposed method uses Elder Guardians to reduce a player's mining ability to, essentially, nothing. This method has pros and cons; on the one hand, removing the ability to mine up blocks is very safe against even the most robustly equipped miner. On the other, it's possible that a TNT-equipped player could ignore this method entirely, barring an explosion-resistant block. There is also the issue of getting Elder Guardians where they need to be, as they are notoriously uncooperative. Still, once in place, the results are undeniable!

Do you think this method would work for you?

Multiplayer: for years, it has been a staple of fun and engagement in Minecraft. It's always entertaining to build huge fortresses and create crazy games and contraptions, but somehow, the whole experience seems a lot more fun when you play with friends. This opens up some interesting questions, since different people define "fun" in their own way: what makes a fun Minecraft server?

This question has haunted server owners since the beginning of multiplayer. What can I do to make my server fun for players? What are they expecting? What am I expecting? Like the many ways one can enjoy Minecraft itself, there is no simple answer. Everyone finds fun in different things; some people love prison servers, others enjoy arcade games. Still others might prefer the high-octane competitiveness of survival games, or factions. There are almost more types of server to write about than one can imagine, but in theory, all of them offer something interesting.

In the coming days, we would like to focus a bit more on Minecraft servers, and what makes them fun for you. Of course, we cannot possibly see every server there is, or every possible type of server that has been created. So, we would like to know a few things from you!

  • What kinds of servers would you like to hear more about?

  • Do you play on a fun server, but feel it could be more fun if more people knew about it? What is it?

  • Would you like to hear about specific categories of servers - that is, "Family-friendly", "large community", etc?

  • What else do you think should get more attention in the world of Minecraft servers?

Tell us about it below!
