Yes, thats Max Brooks, the author of amazing future-history zombie yarn World War Z. Hes writing a Minecraft novel, titled Minecraft: The Island. Ive peeked at an early draft and its entirely amazing, just as we knew it would be. Think cuboid Robinson Crusoe, but madder: a hero stranded in an unfamiliar land, with unfamiliar rules, learning to survive against tremendous odds.

Were all huge fans of Maxs work in books and comics - The Harlem Hellfighters and The Extinction Parade are personal favourites - and his enthusiasm for Minecraft is truly inspiring.

Here are some official quotes from important people!

Im very excited to be part of this new venture, said Max Brooks. Finally I can justify all those hours Ive spent playing Minecraft.

From our first meeting with Max, we knew he would be a perfect fit for our first foray into novels based on Minecraft, said Lydia Winters, Brand Director of Mojang. His enthusiasm and understanding of all things related to the game bring out the sense of wonder and possibility that so many players love about Minecraft - ourselves included.

We are absolutely thrilled to be working with the fantastic team at Mojang on what will be the first ever official Minecraft novels, said Keith Clayton, VP, Associate Publisher at Del Rey, and were so fortunate to have someone of Maxs incredible talent and passion on board for the launch of the series.

Quite so. Prepare yourself for a page-turner!

Add-Ons ahoy! Boss Update coming October 18

Not only does the Boss Update for Pocket and Windows 10 bring some much awaited mobs - the Elder Guardian can now be found in the sprawling, mysterious Ocean Monuments, and the Wither appears in revamped fighting form - there are loads of big technical tweaks besides. Its boss in every sense!

The biggest news is that this update will see the first implementation of Add-Ons. Youll hear even more about Add-Ons tomorrow if you tune into Searge and Jason Majors talk at 3.30pm PST, but heres the low-down: Add-Ons are the first step on our journey towards bringing even greater levels of customisation to all editions of Minecraft - starting with Pocket and Windows 10.

They let you remix mobs, switching out the models, textures and behaviours. Rideable chickens! Ultra-explosive pigs! Etc! Its pretty simple to grasp - all of these components can be tweaked and swapped by editing text files - but its also super powerful, as demonstrated by the elaborate Alien Invasion Add-On we first showed at E3. Now we can reveal that SethBling, Blockworks and MindCrack have collaborated to produce a second example Add-On, called Castle Siege. A massive battle rages and you can pick either side: defend the fort from the mob horde or join the monsters and crash the keep!

Weve put together a new page all about Add-Ons which well add to in the coming weeks. Check back to download the sample Add-Ons for yourself soon! (Oh, and youll be able to play them over Realms, too.)

And thats not all - the Boss Update brings a few more fab features:

  • You can now use slash commands! Summon things, set the time, change the weather, teleport to places, change blocks and much more.

  • Realms now supports importing and exporting worlds! Oh gosh!

  • Xbox Wireless controller support has been added to Gear VR Edition and Windows 10! And Oculus Touch support is coming to VR-lovin Windows 10 players too!

Pretty boss indeed!

Cheerio!

Add-Ons Revealed For Win10/MCPE at Minecon 2016; Boss Update Due October 18th

The long-awaited Boss Update for MCPE/Win10 is just around the corner, with an expected launch date of October 18th! In addition to bringing well known monsters back into the world - the Elder Guardian and Wither, especially - another bit of goodness also shown: add-ons!

Essentially, add-ons are meant to make customization of Minecraft easier to do. Want to swap heads on creatures? Alter their behavior? Create entirely new critters using the old ones as a foundation? All of that (and more) is possible with the new system! Ride a villager! Make pigs fly! Explosive zombies? Why not!

Creature editing is only scratching the surface; SethBling, Blockworks, and MindCrack collaborated on a project to demonstrate what add-ons could be capable of, by creating a mini-game built entirely inside the new system.

More details about the new add-ons system is expected to unveil later tomorrow, during the second half of Minecon 2016.

Earlier this year, we launched an early access version of Minecraft: Education Edition. It went pretty well! Some 15,000 students and teachers got involved, helping to make our Minecraft-based smartification tools even smarter than they already were.

Now, were happy to announce that the full version of Minecraft: Education Edition will be available to buy from November 1. If you want to check it out before purchase, the early access version will still be freely available until then.

Based on the feedback we got from the early access version, were rolling out even more hot stuff in the November release build:

Classroom mode: a companion app that allows teachers to view the world as a map, list all the present students, teleport them about, grant resources and chat. Pretty handy if you want to keep an eye on whats going on without being in the gameworld yourself.

The latest Minecraft Windows 10 edition features: updated UI, leads, horses, player skins, pistons and all the new redstone functionality.

Have other suggestions for what to include? Get in touch. You can also check out the dedicated Education Edition website for resources like lesson plans, tutorials, starter worlds and access to a network of likeminded educators via the Minecraft Mentors program.

Minecraft: Education Edition costs $5 per user, per year or through a district-wide licensing model. To begin using Minecraft: Education Edition early access:

While no set date for the upcoming version (1.11) has been set, a new snapshot is expected to go live this Wednesday, September 28th! In addition to the majestic llama, quite a bit of content is planned for the upcoming update, though it is not expected to have the same sheer volume of features as 1.10. The primary focus will be on Survival mode.

A few features of the new update have already shown themselves in snapshots over the last month, but a great deal of secrecy surrounded 1.11 until today, with a rather substantial amount of information being shown, or spoken about, at Minecon. The list is pretty big - read on!

What a couple of days! Thereve been celebs, surprise reveals, intense tournaments, amazing costumes, talks by clever-clogs, manic panel shows, comedians and more. Best of all, theres been you: the coolest, smartest and friendliest gaming community on Earth. We love you, and it was great meeting so many of you! The Mojang team are happily exhausted - how about you lot?

Here are just a few of the cool things that happened

We announced a novel!

Written by mega-author Max Brooks, no less. Hes a big fan of Minecraft, and were a big fan of him. What a match! Read more about it here.

We launched a site all about Add-Ons!

Add-Ons are the first step on our journey towards bringing even greater levels of customisation to all editions of Minecraft - starting with Pocket and Windows 10. Read more here!

Awesome costumes abounded!

These three cosplay geniuses were the finalists in our costume competition - Vera in the batsuit, Autumn as the White Pumpkin and Ruthie in the incredible expanding Magma Cube costume. Ruthie just edged a very close competition to be crowned the winner. We had OVER TEN THOUSAND votes! OMG!

Good things coming with the Boss Update on Oct 18

Including:

  • The previously-mentioned Add-Ons!

  • Importing and exporting worlds on Realms!

  • Slash commands! Summon things, set the time, teleport to places & more!

  • Xbox Wireless controller support for Gear VR Edition and Windows 10!

  • Oculus Touch support for VR mode on Windows 10 Edition!

Cobalt gets a total conversion, mod support and WASD/mouse controls

The Cobalt team revealed a Counter-Strike-style team-based bomb defusal gametype. And not only that: cool modding tools, mouse-aim, WASD controls, and more - all to be released in one awesome package on Steam soon. Read (and watch) more here!

We ran some amazing tournaments!

Look at this incredible arena! many thanks to Hypixel and Twitch for their sterling work here. We also had contests between big-name crafters Stampy and Squid (which saw poor Stampy forced to plunge his face into cake) and defeat for Console Edition devs, 4J Studios, as they came second place to Youtuber talent. Finally, four fearless Mojangstas chased down intrepid contestants in Hypixels Creeper Carts compo.

The Chinese Mythology Mash-Up pack is most auspicious (and gorgeous)

Just look at this thing. I think it might be the most beautiful mash-up pack weve released. It comes on Oct 4 with a hand-crafted map the evokes the mystic East, 41 new skins and 13 themed music tracks and a special Battle map. Read and see more here.

I rode a horse!

Pretty incredible. In fact there was all kinds of cool stuff on the Expo Hall floor - punchable trees, touchable cakes, flyable ghasts, lovely rubber toys, indie games and loads more. Thanks to all our amazing exhibitors and partners! Here are a few more snaps:

The last shot is of Bandais super-cute constructible erasers, Mine-keshi. I love them. Theyre coming to stores in the US next year. Watch out!

Console Edition update gets bears, banners and more!

Theres loads of good stuff coming in the next free update to Console Edition, which should roll out across our various platforms over Oct 4 and 5. Its got bears, beetroots and banners. Read a more expansive bullet-point list here!

1.11 for PC / Mac brings Illagers, mansions, maps and LLAMAS

Jens revealed some amazing stuff coming to PC / Mac. Youll see much of it in the snapshot arriving on Wednesday, but in the meantime, heres a sneak peek.

There was a Block By Block charity drive!

Build a better world with Minecraft! Block By Block is a supercool partnership between Mojang and UN-Habitat. We use Minecraft to help urban communities participate in the redesign of their public spaces, making them friendlier, prettier, safer and more useful! Its an amazing programme. Check out our work, and donate today to help transform communities all around the globe: blockbyblock.org

We had an amazing Evening Show!

The heroic TJ Miller did a smashing job of compering contests between top tubers, stealing childrens toys and generally delivering a performance of barely-contained mania. Hes a funny man. Go see him perform. Then the evening was capped out by Fitz and the Tantrums - much dancing ensued!

Phew! This post could be eight times as long and still not cover all the amazing stuff that happened. Suffice to say, were all off for a nice cup of cocoa and an early night. Thanks for coming and/or watching everyone! See you again next year!

Cheerio!
